Actress Emma Watson, 18, is set to star in the period romance “Napoleon and Betsy,” replacing Scarlett Johansson, 23, who was deemed too old for the role after it was rewritten toward a more youthful personna.

Watson, will play Betsy Balcombe, a young, impetuous noblewoman trapped on the isolated British island of St. Helena who falls in love with Napoleon, who has been exiled there.

Johansson, is still staying involved in the project as a producer for the Indie film from writer-director Benjamin Ross.

Watson is known for her role as Hermione Granger in Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter” films, and is completing filming on the sixth installment, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”  She just had her 18th birthday, on April 16th,  gaining access to her huge $20 million fortune built on the Potter films.

With filming of the last chapter, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” scheduled to commence in early 2009, Watson hopes to shoot “Napoleon and Betsy” in the fall.

According to bystanders, Hollywood couple Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, had a bit of a lovers’ spat in the Financial District of Boston the other day.

The quarreling lovebirds were walking on Arch Street down by the church and having a rather heated discussion.  According to a witness:

“The Ryan guy was clearly being a baby,” said our spy. “She kept grabbing his arm and he’d yank it away and she’d keep saying ‘Ry, come on, Ry. Stop.’

“He kept switching directions on the sidewalk like he wanted her to leave, responding over and over, ‘Roger that!’ - whatever that was supposed to mean.”

The hostilities quickly ceased when the couple noticed that there was papparazi trailing them.

“He grabbed her hand and stormed away,” said our snoop.

Reynolds,  is in town filming “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock and Scarlett was in town visiting him.  And speaking of proposals; Rumors of trouble in paradise for the Tinseltown twosome are supposedly because Reynolds, 32, wants to settledown and ScarJo is just 23 and very focused on her career at the moment.

Scarlett Johansson offered up a dream date with her at the upcoming premiere for He’s Just Not That Into You, for the charity Oxfam. Oxfam, is an international relief organization that fights poverty around the world.

Well, bidding on ebay has ended and she helped raise $40,100.

The chance to spend a night with the talented beauty sparked a bidding frenzy on eBay.

Bidding began at about $1 but soared upwards with 170 offers made in all.
Along with the chance to meet Scarlett, the winner of the auction will also have their hair and make-up done and will arrive at the premiere in a chauffeured car.

a British fan won the auction and the way the US dollar is plummeting it might almost be a cheap date with the current exchange rate.

 Jerusalem-born Natalie Portman is directing and starring in one of the five-minute short love stories that will make up the anthology New York, I Love You.  The 26-year-old stepped into the sensible shoes of a Hasidic bride-to-be yesterday under the Brooklyn Bridge. The star-studded tribute to the Big Apple includes the Other Boleyn Girl co-star Scarlett Johansson, who is making her directorial debut.

Scarlett, 23, was snapped on the bitter cold streets of her native Manhattan looking authoritative in a cumbersome parka and white woolie cap.

Scarlett’s five-minute film, which will appear alongside 11 others strung together as a tribute to love and the Big Apple, stars Kevin Bacon.

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman have been joined at the hip for the past few weeks, because they’re promoting their new film, “The Other Boleyn Girl.”  It looks like they are making the best of the situation and enjoying each other’s company. The two beauties who played sisters on screen and were not afraid to show it as Natalie leaned in to lock lips with Johansson. Scarlett  looked more than happy to be the object of Natalie’s affections, showing off her cleavage in a 50’s inspired fuscia-coloured dress, while the brunette opted for a black lace number.

It comes as a surprise to some but they actually do like each other. Natalie recently said :

“People keep asking if the rivalry was real but it was the opposite because we just liked each other so much… It was such a rare opportunity to work with an actress my age who I much admire.”

In other Natalie Portman news, she has recently signed a two-year deal with Participant Productions and is set to direct her first movie, and it will be in Hebrew.

The Israeli-born actress will make her debut at the helm of a film version of Amos Oz’s book ‘A Tale of Love and Darkness.’

The book is a memoir of growing up in Jerusalem in the 1940s and 1950s.

“I’ve been reading Oz since high school, and when I read his biography I just sort of saw it,” Portman, 26, told W magazine.

Meanwhile not to forget the multi-talented Scarlett Johansson. She is set to record her debut album Anywhere I Lay My Head, a tribute to blues balladeer Tom Waits.  More details here.

Actress Scarlett Johansson says Tom Waits has given his blessings to her debut album ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’, which features covers of 10 tunes written by the notoriously demanding musician. Scarlett, who opted to cover songs by Waits because “his melodies are so beautiful and his voice is so distinct”, has stated that the man himself has given her album his seal of approval:

“I sent him some of the early, early recordings, and he said, ‘Go ahead,”‘ she told a press conference in New York earlier this week. “I’ve heard he’s very pleased.”

Johansson has also enlisted the help of some fellow celebrities for her new album. According to a report in Billboard magazine, Johansson met David Bowie at a party shortly before she began recording and asked him to contribute.  Bowie has agreed to make a guest appearance on two of the upcoming ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD’s tracks – FALLING DOWN and FANNIN STREET.

The album, which also features the hits FAWN and I DON’T WANT TO GROW UP as well as an original tune, entitled SONG FOR JO, will be released May 20th via Atco/Rhino.

Woody Allen’s upcoming “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is getting a lot of extra press lately for dubious reasons.  Apparently Woody has filmed a “very steamy lesbian sex scene between his lovely muse Scarlett Johansson and the Spanish enchantress, Penelope Cruz.  Sources say:
“The scene is extremely erotic. People will be blown away and even shocked.
Penelope and Scarlett are said to go at it in a red-tinted photography dark room.”

If that’s not enough the ladies later have a threesome encounter with ”No Country For Old Men” star Javier Bardem, who plays Cruz’s husband.
In case anyone is interested, the film also stars Patricia Clarkson, Rebecca Hall, Kevin Dunn and Chris Messina.  People are question whether the title of the film may be slightly altered to “Vicky does Cristina Barcelona”
Woody wrote and directed the film, shot in the city of Barcelona, which is the setting for the romantic adventures of Vicky and Cristina. The two young Americans spend a summer in Spain and meet a flamboyant artist (Javier Bardem) and his beautiful but insane ex-wife (Penelope Cruz). Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is straight-laced and about to be married. Surprisingly Cristina (Scarlett Johansson)  plays a sexually adventurous free spirit. When they all become amorously entangled, the results are both hilarious and harrowing.

Scarlett Johansson and actor, boyfriend, Ryan Reynolds are on the verge of making an engagement announcement, according to a New York Daily News source.

The ‘Lost in Translation’ actress has been dating the ‘Just Friends’ actor for eight-months, after he broke off his engagement to singer Alanis Morissette last February. Side note, if Alanis is upset with Reynolds for breaking things off, expect a blistering tell all hit song from Morissette soon.  She writes best angry I think.

Anyway Johansson and Reynolds were first spotted together in April, taking in a movie at a cinema in New York’s Tribeca neighbourhood.
Scarlet has previously famously dated Hollywood star Josh Hartnett.

Scarlett’s rep is denying any eminent news is forthcoming.
