The ever wisecracking comedian, Wanda Sykes, appeared on the recent episode of the Ellen show and revealed her battle with cancer.  Sykes was told by doctors that she had breast cancer last February.  In order to keep the cancer from spreading, she had to undergo a double mastectomy.

The operation meant she no longer had her big celebrity boobs as she jokingly described them.  The double mastectomy was necessary in her opinion because she did not want any cancer recurrence.  She admits that she was scared when she was first diagnosed but decided to push through with it since the operation was the better option for her total recovery.

Sykes launched into her story of how she discovered she had breast cancer.  She decided to have breast reduction since she was tired of knocking over things.  She developed back aches because of the heavy weight she carried on her front.

After performing reduction, pathologists discovered she had cancer cells in her left breast.  Sykes told Ellen Degeneres that she was indeed lucky since the cancer was discovered at its earliest stage.   Although doctors told her that she can go back to the hospital every three months to get her breasts checked and get a mammogram, Sykes did not want to take the chance.  She revealed that her mother’s side of the family had a history of breast cancer.

Sykes said she was having second thoughts about opening up her struggle with breast cancer since she did not want to become another poster girl. She was already supporting black rights and lesbian rights, she did not want to become a poster child for cancer too.  With her battle with cancer hopefully over, Sykes continues to support breast cancer awareness and fundraising activities.
