It has been confirmed that comedian turned actor Eddie Murphy will be the host for Academy Awards 2012.

The last two Oscar ceremonies were hosted by pairs but it failed to impress the audience. Both Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in 2010 and James Franco and Anne Hathaway in 2011 were accused of turning the show into a snorefest by the critics. Therefore, it was decided to turn Oscars into a solo hosting job, with the producer Brett Ratner opting to go for comedic-theme from the very beginning. And who else is better at keeping the spectators interested than the “Doctor Dolittle” star, who has a vast collection of sharp-witted jokes to choose his Oscars material from.

According to latest media reports, someone like Billy Crystal or Whoopi Goldberg could be added to the line-up as Murphy’s wingman.

Ratner was the director of Murphy-starrer action comedy “Tower Heist” so he knows exactly what he would get from the 50-year old.

Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever. With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances, especially on stage, I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show,” Ratner said.

The 2012 Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on 26 February 2012 in Los Angeles’ Kodak theatre.
