Johnny Depp Movie Cancelled; Stars Feeling the Effects of US Economy Too
A movie project starring Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp has been cancelled. Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney is pulling the plug on the proposed idea of a movie based on The Lone Ranger that would have featured Armie Hammer playing the central character and Depp acting as his sidekick Tonto.
A movie with such a big name getting chopped? At least the sinking US economy is fair to all.
When contacted by E! News for a word on the report, Disney refused to comment. But the general idea is that difficulties with the finances forced it not to start production on The Lone Ranger, a movie that could have been followed up by multiple sequels.
According to THR’s sources, the director of the cancelled movie was Gore Virbinski, who is widely known for spending big bucks on the starting three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. He was asked to cut down on his budget for the movie, but he refused to compromise on the quality that a budget-cut would have caused.
Disney may have been put off by the poor performance of star-studded Cowboys and Aliens that carried the Western touch just like The Lone Ranger would have. Such was Cowboys and Aliens’ lack of impact at the box office that Disney even ignored the fact that The Lone Ranger was a massive hit on multiple mediums from 1930s to 1960s.
While Western classic lovers and fans of Texas Ranger and Tonto may have been disappointed with the decisions, fans of Johnny Depp would get to see a lot of their favorite movie star, as he has recently concluded the filming of The Rum Diaries and is next scheduled to appear on Dark Shadows and movie adaptation of 21 Jump Street.
