Coldplay, Chris Martin salute Amy Winehouse (Video)
Many people were deeply affected when we lost Amy Winehouse on July 27. Among them is Coldplay lead singer, and husband of Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin. And last night he and the guys paid tribute to Amy.
During a successful sell-out concert at the Los Angeles Tennis Center the crowd were treated to hits like ‘Yellow,’ ‘In My Place,’ ‘Clocks’ and ‘Viva La Vida.’ But once it was over Chris returned to the stage and offered a tribute to the late singer by covering her 2006 hit, ‘Rehab.’
Seated at the piano he delivered the key line of Amy’s song in ‘sotto voce’ style and enraptured the crowd;
“They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no…” he intoned.
Then came ‘Fix You,’ which deals with the pain of losing a loved one and the emotional wounds that leaves, which won’t heal. Chris wrote the song for Gwyneth after her father, Bruce died in 2002.
Finally came the guys’ latest single – “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” And so ended 90-minutes of pure musical glory that also debuted new songs like ‘Major Minus,’ ‘Hurts Like Heaven’ and ‘Charlie Brown.’
Chris also asked fans to blog about whether they liked the new songs or not. So now you know.
Here’s the tribute, plus a preview of ‘Every Teardrop…’ Watch and see if you think Chris got it right…
