HBO cult ‘Tales from the Crypt’ set for reboot

If the end of Comic-Con left you hungry for more comic-book fun you might want to sit down – After 15-years one of the most popular comic-themed shows ever to air on HBO – ‘Tales Of The Crypt’ is set to return.

First aired from 1989 to 1996 it gained a huge fanbase and featured guests such as Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Hatcher, Demi Moore, Arnold Schwarzenegger [yes, him!,] Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci, Brad Pitt and many others.

But those behind this return say the new version will have almost no connection to its HBO days;

“It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context,” Andrew Cosby, co-Creator of SyFy’s ‘Eureka,’ and one of the new show’s producers tells reporters. “It’s about continually evaluating the genre, for both existing fans and mainstream audiences.”

The show’s been in development for months but a long legal debate with the rights holders kept it in limbo until now. The new version will still be made as hour-long dramas, but it will now be shot as a standard series, not an anthology, so you’ll follow the characters in ongoing stories.

And the only ‘regular’ cast from the HBO days – The Crypt-Keeper, The Vault-Keeper and The Old Witch will not even be part of the updated show.

A detailed pitch for the series has been completed and Andrew and his pals are already in talks with both cable and network outlets to pick a home for the show. HBO’s sister channel, Cinemax is rumored to be one of the bidders but the final production may be an international effort, with US networks having to bid to get it onto your screens.
