You must have heard of an intruder injuring a celebrity, but a celebrity getting injured while chasing an intruder is something unheard of.

Well this rare kind of accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning in a San Francisco hotel, when game show Jeopardy’s host Alex Trebek got himself injured while chasing a thief. During his yesterday’s hosting duties for National Geographic World Championship, he arrived on crutches.

Patch.com quoted Trebek saying, “It happened at 2:30 a.m., chasing a burglar down the hallway of my San Francisco hotel, when my Achilles tendon ruptured and I then fell on carpet, bruising the other leg in process. Surgery on Friday.” The Marriott Marquis hotel’s representative has confirmed that the unfortunate mishap occurred on their premises.

The local police also verified the occurrence of a hotel burglary but refused to reveal the identity of the victim. According to San Francisco Police’s Lt. Troy Dangerfield, the occupants of the room were sleeping when at “around 3 a.m., one of the victims awoke to notice someone in the room and then noticed the suspect leaving the hotel room.”

The lieutenant further said that the victim injured himself while chasing the suspect, who was eventually caught by the hotel staff. The 56-year old Lucinda Moyers is the prime suspect who was later identified by the injured victim (Trebek). Dangerfield added that Moyers will be facing charges of burglary and receiving stolen goods.

In spite of his injury, Trebek was in good spirits on Wednesday at Google HQ, where he honored his commitment by hosting the geography bee contest.
