The decade-long wait for the fans of director John Carpenter is almost over, as the horror-specialist’s new movie “The Ward” will be in theatres from this weekend.

The psycho thriller is about a character named Kristen (played by Amber Heard), who finds herself in an asylum but has no idea how she got there. As the movie progresses a little further, the protagonist finds that her fellow patients are keeping a dreadful secret from her.

To make it realistic, Carpenter shot the film at an abandoned mental hospital and when MTV News asked Heard what was the experience like, she replied, “We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane. We had this prime little location right between the two. We were fenced in.”

Carpenter added, “It’s an old building, a dusty old building that they had left and was perfect for us. What’s scary about this location was that it was real. It was just creepy.”

The veteran director has cult movies such as “Halloween” and “The Thing” to his credit, so it is natural for the fans to expect something similar. When asked if “The Ward” caters to the requirements of his hardcore fans, Carpenter said that his followers are so varied in nature that it is impossible for him to please everyone. Instead, his focus is always on the quality and uniqueness of story.

He concluded the brief sit-down by adding, “This one [The Ward] was great, an all-female cast, an ensemble cast who had to work together in an isolated dark shadowy location, and there’s something walking around at night. [It was] great fun.”
