Academy award-winning actor Russell Crowe is being eyed to play the Kryptonian father of Superman in the forthcoming movie “Man of Steel” which stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, and Kevin Costner as his human father, Jonathan Kent.

According to reports, negotiations are now ongoing to give the part to Crowe who last starred in “The Next Three Days,” which earned just $21 million at the North American box office. The role of the Kryptonian father of Superman, which only amounted to 15 minutes of screen time in the past Superman movie series was still a hit among the fans of the Comic book superhero.

Crowe would play a scientist who foresees the destruction of his planet and squires his infant son into an escape rocket bound for Earth. The character was last played by Marlon Brando in the 1987 version of the superhero movie.

The new Superman movie is set to be directed by ace director Zach Snyder.

Crowe recently made headlines around the globe when he said in his Twitter account that undergoing a circumcision is dirty and barbaric. Pro-circumcision supporters decried Crowe for being “Anti-Jews” due to his comments. Crowe apologized for his statement saying it is only his personal opinion on the matter and not meant to dishonor religion or culture.

Crowe began his acting career in the late 1980s with roles in Australian television series including Police Rescue and Neighbors. In the early 1990s, Crowe’s local prominence peaked when he won the Australian Film Industry Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of an inner-city skinhead in the Geoffrey Wright film, Romper Stomper.

In the late 1990s, Crowe transferred his acting ambitions to the USA with his breakout role in L.A. Confidential (1997). Crowe won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Gladiator in 2001 and has received three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role: The Insider (1999), Gladiator (2000) and A Beautiful Mind (2001).

He is also co-owner of National Rugby League team the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
