Popular ‘30 Rock’ star Tracy Morgan is at the center of a firestorm of reaction this morning after he made a string of homophobic jokes at a performance in Nashville last week.

During his show at the Ryman Auditorium Tracy, 42, said gay men needed to “quit being p**sies” and not complain about being bullied.

“Gay is something kids learn from the media and programming,” he told the crowd, then went on to explain that his own son “better talk to me like a man….or I’ll pull out a knife and stab that little n*****r to death.”

The Auditorium’s management swiftly issued a statement disclaiming any support for the remarks and GLAAD [The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation] is also joining the fray;

Jarrett Barrios, President of GLAAD says his team are investigating the story and that Tracy should make amends right away;

“We call on him to remove these violently anti-gay remarks from his show and send a strong message that anti-gay violence is not something to joke about.”

A spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign has also made it clear they find Morgan’s jokes in bad taste.

“Hateful remarks that mock youth suicides and the very real emotional and sometimes physical bullying LGBT kids face on a daily basis have no place in a comedy routine,” he tells TMZ. “If these allegations are true, Tracy must immediately accept responsibility and apologize.”

Update: Tracy has just issued an apology for his remarks:

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville,” it reads. “I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

So there we have it. The man has contrition…but is that enough? Let’s hear your views?
