Orlando Bloom Returns as Elf Legolas in “The Hobbit”
Orlando Bloom has joined Peter Jackson’s upcoming two-part Hobbit movie, apparently as the elf-prince Legolas, which might give Tolkien purists some pause. Legolas doesn’t appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original Hobbit book.
Reports first linked new daddy Bloom to the project back in December.
Making the official announcement, Jackson wrote on Facebook : “Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas.
“I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older — and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.”
Other Lord of the Rings actors rejoining the Middle Earth saga include Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum and reportedly Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins.
Stephen Fry will also star as The Master of Laketown.
The 3D project finally began filming in March following months of delays and financial woes.

What a joke! First filming the Hobbit with the 3D novelty and now adding characters to the original story. Looks like Jackson is going on the same route as Lucas took after his amazing creation of Star Wars IV-VI; then he created the really bad prequelsl Star Wars I-III. Is that called hubris??
Were the Star Wars prequels that bad?
Though, I agree that adding additional characters to an already fictional piece is sort of a joke. You’d think that everything in the original story has enough punch to stand the test of time.
well, he WOULD have been there – his dad was the king of the elves that bilbo sees, and he’s certainly an old enough character! even if we don’t know his exact age, he’s older than gimli…who is 139 during lotr
