Country star Blake Shelton in Twitter turmoil over perceived gay views
[HMG Celebrity News] – As you may know, country singer and judge on NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ Blake Shelton recently got some flak over comments which that seemed to insult gay people. Well, he may have done it again with a Shania Twain mashup.
Shania’s song ‘Any Man of Mine’ includes the line ‘“Any man of mine better walk the line; Better show me a teasin’ squeezin’ pleasin’ kinda time.” Blake clearly likes it, but he did some revisions;
“Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song,’ he tweeted to his 304,000 feathery fans. “Any man that tries touching my behind, he’s gonna be a beaten, bleedin’, heaving kind of guy…”
The reaction was instant – and brutal, and Blake was soon doing damage control;
“Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets. Ha! Ha!” he tweeted later. “If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses!”
And soon came more attempted repairs; “Okay, try this. It’s meant to be from a girl’s point of view. Thus, Shania Twain.”
It didn’t help – GLAAD quickly responded, saying jokes like that from a judge on a show where at least one contestant has come out as gay were ‘completely unacceptable.’
“No, @BlakeShelton – violent, anti-gay statements are not what a woman wants. Apologize now!” they broadcast to their 40,000 strong Twitter tribe.
The group also asked ‘The Voice’s producers to make Shelton apologize, but so far no retraction.
And this is not the first time Blake’s offended gay folks – Last month at the Country Music Awards he was on stage when Reba McEntire made a comment about Taylor Swift;
“She writes songs about guys who break up with her, which I don’t understand,” Reba pondered.”What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking?”
To which Shelton replied “He was in ‘Brokeback Mountain!”
…That’s the 2005 movie where Jake played a gay cowboy, opposite Heath Ledger.
And the fallout from his feathered faux-pas has still not expired – As little as an hour ago Blake was still putting out fires;
“Hey, y’all – Allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night.” read the overdue olive branch.
Whether Blake’s sudden contrition will undo the harm is unknown but what do you think? Is this an example of someone with their mouth in first gear and their brain still in ‘Park,’ or was it a mistake, as Blake so desperately claims.
