Catherine Zeta-Jones Hospitalized for Bipolar Disorder Treatment

(HMG Celebrity News) – Catherine Zeta-Jones has reportedly been treated at a mental health treatment center for a bipolar disorder.   Catherine was understandably under some pressure last year seeing stepson, Cameron Douglas, sentenced to five years in prison for drug-related charges, winning a Tony for her performance in A Little Night Music on Broadway, while simultaneously helping nurse her cancer-stricken husband, Michael Douglas, back to health.  Sources report, “Catherine had a lot of trouble coping [with Douglas' cancer]. She was chain smoking and drinking,” although her rep has not confirmed that her stay was related to substance abuse.

A representative for the actress released a statement saying: “After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder.”

The statement continued: “She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”

The actress spent five days in the facility, according to People.   Bipolar also referred to manic-depressive, can bring severe changes in mood and energy that can result in manic episodes where the sufferer remains excitable state (see Charlie Sheen?) – or depressive episodes of heightened sadness.  Bipolar II disorder characterized by more depression, with the mood swings spread over a longer time and the “up” periods less elevated, is not regarded to be as severe as Bipolar I disorder.
