Martin Sheen thinks Charlie is emotionally crippled and going through psychotic episodes
[HMG Celebrity News] – Several weeks of unique behavior have left very few people able to comprehend Charlie Sheen. Among them is his dad, Martin. Now 70, he admits he had similar problems at Charlie’s age, but that doesn’t help much.
“I know what hell he’s living in.” Sheen Sr. tells the UK’s Telegraph. “I’ve had psychotic episodes in public. One of them was the opening scene of ‘Apocalypse Now.’ So I know what Charlie’s going through.”
A devout Catholic, Martin gave up alcohol twenty years ago and doesn’t even get close to drugs. But he still feels his son’s pain.
“When you’re addicted, you don’t grow emotionally,” he says. “So. when you get clean you’re starting at the moment you began using drugs. You’re emotionally crippled.”
So has Martin had any luck in getting his son to listen?
“Every now and then,” says Sheen. “Depends on whether it’s a moment of clarity for him. Charlie’s 45. He’s not a kid. But emotionally he still is.”
And Martin says Charlie’s best route to peace is through faith;
“Faith can help all of us. Addiction’s the dark side,” says the Emmy winning actor and writer. “It’s a reflection of despair. And it’s fed by all the other negativity.”
But while Charlie’s at home, nursing his shiny new CBS pink slip, his dad and older brother, Emilio are shooting a movie in Spain – which Emilio also wrote and directs. It’s about a man whose son dies while backpacking in that country. He collects the body, has him cremated, then does the 500-mile walk himself. And Martin is loving it.
You can see the results when ‘The Way’ is released on May 13. Meantime, what do you think of Martin’s views on his son? Could Chuck find peace in faith, or is it too late for even his own dad to reach him? Let’s get your views…
