Tennis star Serena Williams hospitalized with blood clot on her lung

[HMG Celebrity News] – Sport takes a hard toll on those who pursue it professionally and it appears Serena Williams is now paying that price; The 29-year old tennis star was briefly hospitalized on Monday with a hemorrhage.

Serena attended Elton John’s AIDS Foundation party for the Oscars on Sunday and fellow guests say she looked radiant. But on Monday she was admitted to the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in LA to undergo surgery;

“Serena underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” her rep, Nicole Chabot tells People in a statement.

A hematoma is caused when a blood vessel or artery breaks and blood leaks into the skin. Like a bruise, but far worse. It can cause serious swelling and even immobilize the patient to the same extent as a fracture.

Serena lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida but she’d been spied visiting Cedars several times last week. Yet no-one would say why. Today, her rep finally came clean; She had a blood clot on her lung;

“Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism which was discovered on her return to LA. She’d been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing problems with her foot,” Nicole explains. “Doctors are continuing to monitor her to avoid complications.”

Together with her sister Venus, Serena is regarded as the preeminent force in women’s tennis.  She’s ranked #1 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association and her skills on the court have won her more prize money than any female athlete in history. But her career has been plagued by injuries.
