Justin Bieber fans vent after Esperanza Spalding Grammy win
[HMG Celebrity News] – The Grammy Awards are known for their capacity to pick surprise winners, but when Jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding won ‘Best New Artist,’ fans of Justin Bieber went on a social media rampage.
Within minutes of winning the 26-year old became the focus of online outrage from Bieber fans who were convinced their idol deserved the award.
“Bieber was robbed,” one fan tweeted. “He should have won best new artist! No-one even knows who this Spalding chick is.”
Another fan agreed; ”’Best New Artist’ should now be called ‘Artist You’ll Never Hear From Again,” wrote @sarajoallocco.
And Eugene Ramirez had some advice for the judges; “The Grammy judges better watch their backs! A bunch of tween girls are out to get you now!”
But the pain was clearly too great for just 140 characters so fans invaded Esperanza’s Wikipedia page and added ‘facts’ like her middle name was supposedly ‘Justin’ or ‘Quesadilla.’ They also made some scathing additions;
“She now has the 2011 Grammy for being the Best new Artist — Even though no-one has ever heard of her!” added one anonymous fan. “Justin Bieber deserved it. Go die in a hole!” was another entry.
Esperanza’s defense was handled by just one brave soul who wrote; “Ha-Ha, Justin Bieber, you’re just a little boy with no Grammy for Best New Artist.”
The page was quickly locked by Wikipedia’s admins and the entries have since been deleted.
As for the performers themselves, after completing an MTV interview Justin literally bumped into Esperanza and the reaction was telling – He congratulated her on the win and the two singers shook hands.
It’s a shame some of his fans couldn’t be so mature.
Justin’s been around for two years, so he’s hardly ‘New,’ but do you think he should have won? And what’s your opinion of the assault on Wikipedia. Let’s get your reaction…

Of course she should have won. I wish Esperanza would have been given an opportunity to perform. I think she would have shut up a lot of ignorant people. I’d much rather listen to her than Mic Jagger singing some old Salmon Burke tune from 60′s.
The category is BEST new Artist, not MOST POPULAR, or PRETTIEST SHE BOY, MOST ELECTRONICALLY FIXED IN THE STUDIO, MOST ANDROGYNOUS HAIR, MOST PROFITABLE BOY ACT, or any other moniker that might fit the Bieber.
I’m surprised the Academy had the guts to go with talent over notoriety in this category. Of course JB would have been an easy, albeit brainless choice. But who could have anticipated the backlash of the minions of Bieberheads–whiny little tweeny boppers who result to “bullying” to express their anger.
Profane and vile these Bieberheads are–cursing, threatening and spewing their hateful venom in the most public of forums–Wikipedia, Facebook and Twitter. Some of the Tweets and Wiki entries are criminal. BTW, it’s called ASSAULT when you threaten someone. Of course these little girls (and maybe some little boys) are just as ignorant of the law as they are of civility, and the fact that their Tweets and posts are easily traced back to them. I just hope for your sake you, and you parents, are ready to deal with the consequences of outbursts. We live in an day and age that has little tolerance for such vitriol, especially online.
“Who is this Esperanza Spalding?” “Who’s ever heard of HER?”
I tell you who, me! That’s why I’m smarter that you!
When people, even grownups (mostly the moms of tweenyBiebers, TB’s) were lauding the greatness of the likes of Bieber and Cee Lo Green, I would show them a clip of Esperanza Spalding from an appearance on Austin City Limits a while back. I’d say, “look at her. There’s no one like her.
One night, about a year ago I stumbled upon this performance while flipping through the channels one late eve. Being a accomplished musician myself, I nearly fell off the sofa when I heard this girl open her mouth and begin to sing. Not only is she an amazing musician, her talent is from another galaxy. Oh, and by the way, she plays the bass while she’s singing–not just simple I,IV, V three-cord favs, but complex jazz and fusion changes–like Wayne Shorter’s Endangered Species. Or her hauntingly beautiful rendition of Nina Simone’s Love me or Leave Me. Amazing!
Let’s see Justin attempt anything remotely close to that. “Oh he’s played the drums and sang since he was little,” they Bieberheads exclaim. Really? You think Esperanza hasn’t done that and then some.
Bieber is a product of the pop culture, nothing more, nothing less. How many dozens, if not hundreds, of other manufactured male poppers have come and gone. It wasn’t too long ago that the same older sisters were screaming about Aaron Carter. Aaron Who? Exactly!
I don’t expect the musically ignorant, dumbed-down tastes of our pop culture to understand, much less accept a talent like Esperanza Spalding. This is a generation that believe you can get a good steak at Outback, fashionable clothes at A&F, and feel connected to celebrities though their tweets. Fine, I’m not going to expect you to get it. And, I’m not going to scream at you for violently hating a truly great artist.
I just wish you girls would stop being such c**ts and accept the fact that your precious Bieber lost, fair and square. Geesh!
Well said. The problem for the younger generation is that our politicians have eliminated or cut music and arts programs. Only a small percentage of young people know, read or write music. Record companies promote mainly for profit and create the images of artists to enhance sales. Thus quality music suffers. Thus I can understand the frustrations of thoseanhry fans. The follow an image. Their reaction is not surprising.
