MTV stokes teen pregnancy feud with ‘No Easy Decision’
[HMG Celebrity News] – Already under fire for seeming to promote teen pregnancy with ’16 and Pregnant’ MTV is now accused of hyping abortion with an even more contentious show – ‘No Easy Decision,’ which debuts tonight.
The first episode features Markai Durham, first seen on ’16 and Pregnant’ last month. In this outing Markai discovers she’s pregnant again and must decide whether to carry the baby to term. And this has the pro-life folks really steamed.
Clearly tuned in to the show’s media potential, MTV has not released clips, and has also forbidden Markai to give interviews. But the 19-year old Florida native has used social media to prepare fans for the drama;
“I get sad thinking about it, but everything happens for a reason,” she wrote in one post. “God gave me 3 paths; Abortion, adoption, or raising this baby and another. I chose this path and I think how stressing things would have been if I hadn’t.”
Since giving birth to her daughter, Za’karia in October last year Markai has been seeing a therapist to cope with the feelings. She’s also been answering questions from fans; In one post on Christmas Eve Markai admits she’d used drugs, and also slept with numerous men but used birth control.
“I never knew it ran out,” she admits. “They give you a time limit to get the shot again, so I thought I had time.”
MTV has promised it would address the teen pregnancy issue from all possible sides, but the show is made in collaboration with ‘Exhale,’ a support group for teens who have had or are planning abortions.
“Anytime someone can help tell stories about women who had abortions, we see that as a good thing,” says Exhale counselor Erica Johnson. “Markai’s story is in line with ones we so often hear; A large number of women who have abortions already have children.”
And Markai’s not taking all the negative feedback too well;
“She didn’t expect to be ridiculed and put down so much,” her Facebook page admin told the Post. “All she was trying to do was be honest and share her story and struggles with other young women.”
And for Markai, the decision boiled down to one simple idea.
“It was only an embryo, not a baby when I was pregnant,” she told online fans. “So that’s what I believe now. And I know one day God will give that embryo back to me once we’re better.”
The show airs at 11.30pm — will you watch? And what’s your position on the pro-life debate?
