Harry Potter actress threatened with death over lover
[HMG Celebrity News] – The idyllic world of Harry Potter was tainted by reality recently when one of its supporting cast, Afshan Azad was threatened with death because of her family’s religious convictions.
Afshan, 22, who first appeared as ‘Padma Patil’ in 2005′s ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire’ was threatened with death by both her brother and father after she became friends with a young Hindu man. Afshan and her family are Muslims.
The alleged incident happened at Afshan’s family home in Manchester, England on May 21st. Her father and brother, Abul and Ashraf Azad were later charged with threating to kill her and both were in court yesterday to face charges.
“The allegation is that she was the victim of a wholly unnecessary and unpleasant assault by her brother,” prosecutor Richard Vardon told Manchester’s High Court.
Mr. Vardon went on to recount that Afshan’s brother then woke her father and yelled at him; “Sort out your daughter! She’s a slag!”
“He continued to further assault her, in disputed Bengali, shouting, ‘Just kill her!’” Mr. Vernon continued. “There was a discussion where she was called a prostitute.”
The next day Afshan gave Police a statement saying her father tried to force her into an arranged marriage, and also outlining his threat to kill her;
“My father began saying he would do it,” the Telegraph reports her statement as saying. “He did not want his sons to have blood on their hands.”
Afshan told the detectives she felt scared and escaped through her bedroom window. But she later recanted the statement and refused to let Police press charges, saying any such action would put her in “genuine danger.”
Instead, her father was bound over to keep the peace for 12-months. But the Judge made it clear the threats were to stop;
“You leave this court without any findings of guilt against you,” Judge Roger Thomas told Abul. “Having said that, you are bound over to keep the peace for 12-months. You have to be of good and peaceable behavior towards your daughter.”
Her brother was then freed on bail pending another court date on January 21, where he’s due to be sentenced for causing ‘Actual bodily harm’ to Afshan at an earlier hearing. He could go to jail.
