Golden Globes’ nod for Burlesque uncovers judging corruption?

[HMG Celebrity News] – For years the Golden Globes were regarded as a signpost to the Oscars; If it won a Globe it was sure to get a gold man as well. Today, few in Hollywood respect them, and since Cher and Christina Aguilera got picked for ‘Burlesque’ this disdain has grown.

Released on November 24, Burlesque’s $55-million budget and withering reception rightly made it one of the most expensive Thanksgiving turkeys in history. So when it received a nomination for ‘Best Picture’ at last week’s Globes preview, even those whose medication prompts them to consider the awards vaguely relevant were confused.

But the cause of this error may have been found – Just before they cast their votes, the obscure collection of 81 foreign journalists who are the Globes’ voting panel received a lavish, free trip to Las Vegas to see Cher in concert.

And sources say Cher is seriously peeved at the news they were so obviously bribed;

“Cher is furious this happened,” the insider tells PopEater. “She meets people backstage every week and never asks what they do. She just assumed this was another group of fans for her to meet.”

And if it’s confirmed the judges were schmoozed, Cher wants no part of the award;

“She would rather they keep the damn thing,” the snitch confides.

But bribery or not, the Globes’ reputation as an indicator of Oscar success is sure to continue – despite the fact that since 2005 only “Slumdog Millionaire” has won both.

Also, 99% of celebrities are attention-whores. Put enough in one room and the media will swarm, and promptly make both them and the show look important. So it’s sure to go on boring us for many years yet.

If you saw the movie, let’s get your vote – Are the Globes important or impotent? And are you on Cher’s side?
