(HMG Celebrity News) – When Detroit soul singer Aretha Franklin underwent what was called “highly successful” surgery last week, there was no indication what she is being treated for.  A couple days before a prayer vigil for Franklin, 68,  was held in front of the Spirit of Detroit in downtown Detroit.

The Detroit News is now reporting that the Queen of Soul,  is suffering from pancreatic cancer, which not so long ago took the life of  Patrick Swayze.  Fox 2 in Detroit also posted today that Franklin has cancer, attributing the information to “a close relative.”  Unfortunately it is the only major cancer with a prognosis in the single digits, with those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer having a 5 percent chance of living five years.

In November, Aretha canceled all public appearances for six months “at the insistence” of her doctors.

A statement at the time from her publicist said she was “very anxious to get back on the road to perform for her fans”.
