Robert De Niro tapped for Golden Globe honor

Robert De Niro[HMG Celebrity News] – Awards season is coming, and that means more C-list actors trying to look humble as they’re given awards they can no more pronounce than deserve. But among such melodramatic mediocrity this year will be Robert De Niro, who’s been tapped for a prize at the next Golden Globes.

Already a two-time Oscar winner, the 67-year old actor has been picked to receive this year’s ‘Cecil B. DeMille Award’ at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, for what the Globes’ bosses call his “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.”

They got that right! Born in New York in 1943, Rob made his first film at just 20, and has since made no less than 66 others, scoring two Oscars and 27 other awards, and being nominated more than 34 times.

And his list of great films could keep your Netflix queue filled for weeks -  ‘The Godfather: Part II,’ ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘The Deer Hunter,’ ‘Raging Bull,’ ‘The Untouchables,’ ‘Goodfellas,’ and perhaps even Ben Stiller’s recent crowd-pleaser ‘Meet the Parents.’

But the award is no meaningless bauble — Past honorees include Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood and the King of Hollywood, Steven Spielberg.

Sadly, Barbara Streisand is the last woman to be chosen, way back in 2000. And Sydney Poitier, who won it in 1982, is the only black actor so far to receive the award.

Nominations for 2011′s Golden Globes will be unveiled on December 14. The awards will then be dispersed on January 16 at the Beverly Hilton, with live coverage on NBC.

The snag is, Rob’s next film, ‘Little Fockers,’ with Jessica Alba, Ben Stiller and Laura Dern opens at Christmas.

He’ll just have to hope the Golden Globe folks don’t change their minds…
