David Letterman admits Oprah Winfrey prank that started bad blood
[HMG Celebrity News] – Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman are both famous and rich, but for 16-years they never spoke to each other. And last night Dave told Jon Stewart the real reason why.
People assumed the two were not speaking because of Dave’s painfully lame joke as the host of the 1995 Oscars — He spied Uma Thurman in the front row and pretended to introduce her to Oprah: “Uma,…Oprah! Oprah,…Uma!” This went on for ages…and no-one laughed.
But Jon Stewart got the real story — The two were at war because Dave stuck Oprah with the check for a meal.
It seems Dave and his girlfriend, Regina arrived at an expensive French restaurant in New York in 1989 and spied Oprah and her latest companion at a nearby table. And Dave had a devious idea.
“I’m gonna make Oprah buy us lunch,” he told Regina.
So he told the waiter that the ‘lady’ at the next table had offered to pay for their meal. Once lunch was over Dave and his lady just got up and left — waving to Oprah so the waiter would think their agreement was real.
It’s not like Oprah couldn’t pay for the meal — According to Forbes’ 2010 list of the world’s richest people she’s worth $2.4-billion. But that was the start of a mutual 16-year tantrum that only ended in 2005.
That’s the basic story, but watch the video and get the full effect. Jon Stewart is stunned by the cause of their adolescent conflict and you don’t want to miss his reaction…
