Batman’s Chris Nolan choosing next Superman director

Christopher Nolan[HMG Celebrity News] – Although the franchise has been dormant since 2006, major announcements involving a new Superman movie are about to emerge, so we’re assured.

The new film’s producers, Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas are now holding meetings with a long list of directors whose task it would be to take charge of the next Superman adventure, due out from Warners sometime next year.

Apart from Batman, the Superman franchise is the biggest box-office success in the entire range of D.C. Comics’ film adaptations, so the job requires someone with unusual skills.

So far being considered are Tony Scott, who directed Denzel Washington in the action-drama ‘Unstoppable’ due out in six weeks, and Matt Reeves, director of the vampire-themed drama ‘Let Me In’ which opens next week.

Also on the short-list is Jonathan Liebesman, who directed the 2006 ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake and will also helm ‘Clash of the Titans 2′, Duncan Jones, who just finished the Sci-Fi thriller ‘Source Code,’ and ‘Sucker Punch’s Zack Snyder.

At one point Guillermo del Toro was even in line for the job, but he turned it down.

Some of these candidates have previous movie assignments that make their involvement unlikely, but if Warner’s deal is sweet enough it could still happen.

But Chris doesn’t have much time to choose — Deadline says Warners will lose several rights to the Superman character in 2013, so they must write, make and release the movie by mid-2012 or they’re sunk.

And even though the choice is not even made yet, the bun-fight among comic-book fans as to who it should be is already in progress — and it’s getting ugly.

Duncan Jones and Tony Scott are the least favorite to win, but who would be your choice? And why?…
