Winona Ryder[HMG Celebrity News] – In a move that may surprise some of you, Tim Burton has announced the cast for his next movie, ‘Frankenweenie’ — and it doesn’t include Johnny Depp.

Tim originally made the 30-minute stop-motion animated short for Disney in 1984 — and they fired him for wasting their time.  But now he’s a huge box-office success the folks at the mouse-house all think he’s a genius, and invited him to do it again. In a longer version.

The story concerns Victor Frankenstein, a young boy whose dog, Sparky gets killed by a car. At school Victor learns how electrical impulses can reanimate muscles and uses that knowledge to bring his pet back to life. But this scares the neighbors who then corner the pair at the miniature golf course — where Sparky gets killed again.

And the cast of this long-overdue remake is like a family reunion: Winona Ryder (who was in ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and ‘Beetle Juice’) will play Elsa, while Martin Landau (from ‘Ed Wood’) will be the voice of Mr. Rzykruski.

Meanwhile, Martin Short (from ‘Mars Attacks’) and Catherine O’Hara (‘Beetle Juice’ and ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’) will be the voices of four characters each.

Even the script is to be written by one of Tim’s long-time friends — John August wrote ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.’ but he also penned ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and 2005′s ‘Corpse Bride.’ which featured Johnny as one of the voices.

Frankenweenie is due for release in its rebooted form on March 9th, 2012. But without Johnny involved will you go and see it?
