[HMG] – Rumors of a third Ghostbusters movie have been floating for over a year, but production was stalled by Bill Murray refusing to be one of the stars. That’s now neatly solved and filming is due to begin.

Reports confirm that Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson have all agreed to appear, and will be joined by Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis — who is coming out of retirement just for this gig.

Sadly, Slimer is still locked in some contract disputes.

Director, Ivan Reitman — who directed their classic 1984 debut – will be in charge once again, and plans to restart the franchise by revealing that Dana Barrett’s child in the first movie, Oscar, was also Pete Venkman’s son.

During a 1989 interview with Arsenio Hall, Sigourney revealed that the cast always agreed Oscar’s real dad was the violinist Dana is seen dating in the original film…But when did Hollywood ever let facts stop them making some cash??

In the new film, Oscar is now 21 and ready to take over dad’s job. And that’s pretty handy as Bill Murray made it painfully clear to the studio that to get him back in the film they’d need to kill him.

So the screenwriters did — Dr. Venkman will appear as a ghost.

The story apparently resumes with the original Ghostbusting team restarting their service after decades in mothballs. We then follow them as they hire the new ‘busters,’ and let them take over.

It should be in theaters in time for Christmas next year…Or perhaps 2012 — the studio still can’t be sure.

We’ll keep you advised…
