Zac Effron and Justin Timberlake in Broadway duel
[HMG] – Most musicals come and go like a breeze, but the latest Broadway sensation ‘Memphis’ won four Tonys — and now Zac Effron and Justin Timberlake are scrapping like divas to be in the film.
Opening on Broadway in October last year the show is loosely based on the story of legendary Memphis DJ, Dewey Phillips, who was one of the first white men to play black music on radio in the mid-1950s. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical, plus four others in June. And now Zac and Justin both want to be Dewey.
Zac attended the play’s performance last Tuesday with girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, and is said to be keen to capture the lead role, whom the authors renamed ‘Huey Calhoun.’ He went backstage at intermission and was said to be ‘gushing’ when introduced to Montego Glover, who plays Felicia Farrell.
“When Montego came over, Efron said, ‘I just can’t stay away from the show,’” a spy tells the Post.
It was 22-year old Zac’s second time at the show in a month.
And the plot thickens – Zac and Justin have both seen the show more than once. But despite there being no apparent plans to make it into a movie, so has Oliver Stone.
Insiders say Stone has since had several meetings with the show’s authors, Joe DiPietro and David Bryan [who plays keyboards with Bon Jovi,] and Stone favors Justin to be Huey Calhoun.
One of Oliver’s reps has since confirmed such a meeting took place, and that they discussed a film adaptation.
The closest thing Oliver’s ever done to a musical is his 1991 biopic of 60′s legends, ‘The Doors,’ starring Val Kilmer. But the man’s won three Oscars, so he clearly knows film.
This could be major, or it could all come to nothing. We’ll keep you informed how it goes…
