Expert criticizes Angelina Jolie for tricking son

(HMG) – Angelina Jolie played a practical joke on her son, while shooting the movie Salt that has invoked the wrath of a distinguished psychologist. Jolie told Mandrake at the premiere of Salt at the Empire, Leicester Square, in London, that she invited nine-year-old son, Maddox, on to the set of her new film but didn’t tell him she would be in make-up disguised as a man, in the spy film. Apparently Maddox was completely fooled.
“I invited him to come say ‘hi’ to me and I didn’t tell him who it was,” said the actress. “So he came down, he shook my hand and he hung out with me for a while and then I said ‘Mad?’ and he went ‘Aaaaagh! Muuum!’ and he totally freaked out.”
Mind you at 9, Maddox probably has a pretty good idea what kind of job his parents have and has probably gone ‘trick or treating’ a time or two.
But Dr Dorothy Rowe, the Australian psychologist, whose book Why We Lie has just been published, takes a dim view of the star’s behavior.
“I think by the time a child reaches his age, he has a sense of himself and wants to appear to be in control,” she tells Mandrake. “In fooling her son in this way, she made a fool of him in public and this will make him feel betrayed, make him feel no longer in control, and break down the relationship of trust he has with his mother.
“Mothers play specific roles in their children’s lives, as fathers do, and, in forming a bond with her son as a man, and then unmasking herself as his mother, it throws his compass out entirely. It is the sort of thing that makes for a very insecure young man.”
The disguise also didn’t float Brad Pitt’s vote either, in a different respect: “He couldn’t kiss me as a man,” the actress added.
