Elton John denounces Arizona SB-1070 boycott
[HMG] – Despite a well-publicized campaign to protest Arizona’s hated SB-1070 immigration law through a musician’s boycott, Elton John not only played there last week, he also had a blunt message for those who refuse.
Addressing an audience of 8,800 during his sold-out concert at the Tucson Arena on July 22, the 63-year old said:
“We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won’t come here. They are f***wits! Let’s face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what’s the f**k with these people?”
Elton is not exactly famous for toeing the line or responding to outside coercion – Last month he played a concert in Israel despite calls for a boycott after aid shipments did not reach its people.
“Musicians spread love and peace, and bring people together. That’s what we do,” he told the crowd at the time. “We don’t cherry-pick our conscience.”
As for Arizona, the boycott – known as ‘The Sound Strike’ – has so far cost the state lucrative events by The Lilith Fair, Los Lobos, Hall and Oates and Pitbull, while Nine Inch Nails, Maroon 5, Kanye West, Sonic Youth, Michael Moore and Chris Rock all refuse to do work there.
But other artists are not so involved – Robert Plant has just played the Dodge Theater in Phoenix. Lady Gaga has a show at the US Airways Center on Saturday, and John Mayer is booked for the Valley in August.
In response to an injunction by lawyers representing the Federal government, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton gutted the widely despised law yesterday, just before it went into effect at midnight. But Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has vowed to appeal, so this argument is not over yet.
But whose side are you on – Was Elton right to perform, or should Arizona go silent?…

In Mexico, it’s a felony to be an illegal immigrant, yet Mexico’s former villagers seem to consider social security fraud to be their birthright. It may shock some people to find out that Latin America is not the only source of unskilled, low-wage labor, and that farmers in the San Joaquin Valley bring over Thai laborers legally on short-term visas. Arizona is trying to prod the federal government into action, since none of the levers – work permits, rescinding automatic citizenship to ‘anchor babies,’ secure borders, and adequate supply of workers – are currently working. Elton John can probably appreciate that becoming a lawful US resident requires time and thousands of dollars in fees. It’s unfortunate that the US continues to drain Mexico’s workforce, and in so doing, prevents that country from developing its economy. Illegal immigration simply ensures that Old Mexico remains Old Mexico – a violent trans-shipment point for drugs, where villagers have no upward mobility or real job prospects, because everyone takes for granted that all innovation comes from the US.
And because he’s a singer songrwriter makes him right does it. And you say that it is hateful do you. who by? certainly not by the governer or the majority of people who live in Arizona. O rperhaps it just rubbishes your sense of being right. Perhaps you really don’t like the idea that other people have differing opinions to you and that they just might be right. It’s all very weel having these ideals, the unfortunate thing about ideals is that they rarely, if ever work in real life. Gut bucket elton is no more qualified to comment on this thean anyone else. The people who ar qualified are the people who actually live there. Barak Obama is’nt even American by birth so what is he doing ruining your country?
Excellent post. I can add nothing more. Very well said!
Elton John has it right. He didn’t take a stand for or against SB 1070, just the boycott. If the morons who are boycotting Arizona believe its even a flee on a fat man’s butt, they are living in a fog. We don’t even know who you are. Perhaps you are being cheered on by your fringe fan base, but nobody knows who they are either. So enjoy yourself. It means absolutely nothing.
Flee is spelled “f-l-e-a”, but you wouldn’t know that as you are obviously an IGNORANT poster.
” widely despised ” More then 60% of Americans think this is a good law, not just Arizona residents, all of america. Please get you facts correct before you post stupid articals.
YOUR mother.
S. B. 1070 is already a federal law. The reason the law is not enforced is the mayors and city council members of most of the cities in Arizona all want the Hispanic vote so they will not let the law enforcement officers pursue the illegal aliens.
This new state law makes it possible for the average police officer to do their job. The only law enforcement agencies that were enforcing the law was the sheriffs of Maricopa and Pinal counties in Arizona. There is no intention for race discrimination.
In a national pole, 61 % of legal Hispanics are in favor of the S.B. 1070 law. In a similar pole, over 70 % of all Americans are in favor of the law.
Phoenix is close to # 1 in kid –napping in the U.S.A. 90 % of these are related to the illegal alien problem. Close to half of the Illegal aliens caught in the last 2 months were carrying drugs. They were used by the drug cartel in Mexico to bring drugs into our country.
Several hundred acres along the Mexican and Arizona border are posted by a U.S. Land Management Agency. They warn U.S. citizens that is not safe to hike, 4 wheel or stroll in these areas. That’s right, Americans are not safe to use U.S land for recreation. The citizens in these areas live in constant terror. In the past some of the citizens in this area put out bottles of water so the aliens will not die of thirst. One rancher was killed for his efforts. The killers foot steps lead back to the Mexican border.
One day last April in the Pinal County jail, there were over 400 illegal aliens. Almost half of these aliens were from Muslim countries and some could speak excellent Spanish. This is a matter of record.
The Government knows about these things but will not do anything about Arizona’s problems. This is the reason for S. B. 1070.
We can’t afford these expenses. The law implements racial discrimination, which is unconstitutional. Our resources should continue to be concentrated at the borders, where we can control the issue without discrimination. Tell Elton to take a hike in the AZ area that is full of illegals and drug runners and maybe he can learn. He is not relevent.
