Elizabeth Vargas fails to mention role in Michael Douglas’ divorce
[HMG] – In an ill-advised example of miscast reporting, Good Morning America host, Elizabeth Vargas chaired a discussion on yesterday’s show regarding the feud between Michael Douglas and ex-wife, Deandra Luker over his ‘Wall Street 2′ income.
But the host failed to mention she dated the actor while the two sides were still married.
Elizabeth, 47, prefaced a serious discussion between herself and two lawyers regarding the case with this lead-in;
“A lot of people were surprised that 10-years after collecting one of the most expensive divorces in history, taking home $45-million, an ex-wife can come back and say: ‘I get to have more!’ ”
Needless to say, when Liz’s connection to Michael was uncovered the phone lines lit up. And ABC is now in damage control;
“It was a mistake,” a red-faced ABC rep told the Post. “It should have been disclosed to the viewers. Elizabeth did tell her producer and he decided she should host the segment. But she did a fair and unbiased job.”
Michael married Diandra on March 20, 1977. It was this pairing that, on December 13th 1978 produced Cameron Douglas — who, as you’ll recall, was sentenced on April 20th to five years in jail for dealing in heroin, meth and cocaine.
The pair divorced on June 1st of 2000, after 23-years. Five months later, Michael married Catherine Zeta Jones.
But, as you might guess, Diandra’s reps don’t exactly share ABC’s views on Elizabeth’s work;
“Elizabeth was involved with Michael before the divorce — how can she not be biased?” was the tortured response.
