Former Tennis Star Jennifer Capriati Hospitalized After Apparent Drug Overdose

(HMG) – Former world No.1 tennis player Jennifer Capriati was rushed to hospital after paramedics responded to a call for a possible drug overdose from a hotel in Riviera Beach, Florida on Sunday morning, according to TMZ.   According to the star’s father Stefano, the Olympic gold medal winner is in a stable condition and ‘recovering well’. The possibility Capriati may have overdosed on drugs brings back memories of her younger life. After rising through the ranks and even winning a major championship at age 13, Capriati rebelled and encountered personal and legal troubles, and her arrests for shoplifting and pot made her “the poster child for burned-out sports prodigies”. She returned to the tour a couple years later and began a steady comeback that culminated in the World No. 1 ranking. Capriati won 14 career titles, including three Grand Slams. She also won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics and played her last match in 2004 after injuries forced her to reluctantly retire. In an interview with the New York Daily News in July 2007, Capriati admitted to suffering from depression and having suicidal thoughts. She said, “When I stopped playing, that’s when all this came crumbling down.” If I don’t have [tennis], who am I? What am I? I was just alive because of this. I’ve had to ask, ‘Well, who is Jennifer? What if this is gone now?’ I can’t live off of this the rest of my life.” Apparently she still hasn’t figured it out?
