Vatican Newspaper declares the Blues Brothers a ‘Catholic classic’

BluesBrothers(HMG) – Apparently calling a nun a ‘penguin’ is not only funny, it could get you blessed.  On the 30th anniversary of the Blues Brothers’ release, the official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, has declared it a “Catholic classic”.   The newspaper, once a solemn publication devoted to theology and Vatican appointments, has recently embraced popular culture and devotes an entire page to consider the classic movie’s meaning and legacy.  It points out that Jake and Elwood Blues played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, battled police, a psychotic ex-girlfriend, country and western fans and neo-Nazis in their “mission from God” to raise enough money to prevent the closure of the church-run orphanage in which they grew up.  The newspaper also notes that the film is sprinkled with Catholic and moral references such as the nun Sister Mary Stigmata, who they call “The Penguin.” Other “Catholic Classics” the newspaper endorsed were a bit more obvious choices like “The Ten Commandments,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Passion of the Christ.”
