Teenage sailor Abby Sunderland found after rescue search in Indian Ocean

(HMG) – Abby Sunderland, 16, who was feared to have been lost in the Indian Ocean has been found alive and well. The young sailor hit trouble when her 40ft sloop Wild Eyes encountered bad weather in the frigid southern Indian Ocean. A massive international search and rescue operation was launched yesterday when Sunderland set off two emergency beacons thousands of miles from land after losing satellite phone communication with her support team in America. The 16-year-old Southern California sailor whose around-the-world solo voyage began in January successfully linked up with an Australian search-and-rescue team early Friday morning after a plane crew found her boat. The mast had broken off the boat, disabling the craft and effectively ending her record attempt, but Sunderland is uninjured with a heater and at least two weeks worth of food. She will need some of those supplies because it will take at least 40 hours for a fishing boat to pick her up.
