Former 80′s star, Adam Ant detained for bizarre behavior
[HMG] – In a sad story that recalls those languid days of the 80′s when singers actually bothered to sing, it’s been announced that former British glam-rock star, Adam Ant has been committed to a psychiatric hospital…again.
The 55-year old Londoner, who was MTV’s first-ever guest VJ and counts both ‘Scrub’s Heather Graham and ‘Ally McBeal’s Amanda Donohoe among his alleged conquests was ordered to enter a London facility after a bizarre concert that may finally snuff out his fame.
Adam [real name, Stuart Goddard] has battled depression and bi-polar disorder for years, but he announced earlier this year he would return to the stage for the sake of his daughter, Lily, who never saw him perform at his peak.
But an unfocused, rambling and abuse-tinged performance in Portsmouth could now be her last chance.
On May 11, Adam was booked as part of a concert arranged to raise money for needy children in the Philippines. He spent several minutes on stage just adjusting his guitar, then invited a four-year-old boy to join him and began to teaching him the words to The Who’s 1965 hit, ‘My Generation.’
At this point the crowd started to leave, and Adam just seems to have lost it. He asked if there were any Christians in the room [it was a Church] then told them;
“I’m a punk rocker. I don’t do Christian. You can f–k off to the church.”
This got him booed off the stage, at which point two girls he’d introduced as his nieces got into a fight with the son of the concert’s promoter when they heard he’d canceled the show.
Adam was due to return to London on Saturday for another gig, but a message has since appeared on his fan-site.
“Ant fans – Please send me postcards at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital…I am having a well-earned rest at Her Majesty’s Pleasure and am continuing being an art student. I have a great view and am considering gigs later in the year.”
It’s not a rest — Adam was forcibly hospitalized under Britain’s 1983 ‘Mental Health Act.’
And this is not the first time: In 2002 Adam pulled a fake gun on drinkers at a North London bar, but escaped jail on the grounds of mental illness. He was then committed to a hospital in 2003 after threatening a neighbor with a shovel. He’s also admitted himself to psychiatric hospitals on several occasions.
The motive for this ill-advised comeback, however, is what Adam calls his ‘reason for living’ — 12-year old Lily.
“I’ve had this lifelong battle against manic depression,” he told the Mail. “But I’ve had to overcome it for her sake. She has never seen me perform and doesn’t know what The Ants were all about.”
Under the Mental Health Act’s provisions, Adam could now be kept at the hospital for a considerable time. If he gets back on stage and keeps his mind, we’ll cover it here…

Adam Ant a punk rocker? That is crazy.
