Swedish royal romance rocked by affair

Jonas Bergstrom - Princess Madeleine

(HMG) – It was reported this weekend that the very attractive Princess Madeleine of Sweden had broken off her engagement with attorney Jonas Bergstrom.  “They have decided that the best for them is to go their separate ways,” the palace said in a brief statement.  Princess Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine is the youngest child of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Princess Madeleine, 27, is third in line to the Swedish throne, after her sister Crown Princess Victoria and brother Prince Carl Philip.

It turns out the breakup may have been precipitated after reports that Bergstrom had had an affair with Tora Uppstroem Berg, a 21-year-old Norwegian handball star and a photography student at Arts University College Bournemouth.

The couple announced their engagement in August last year, but a date had not yet been set for the wedding.

Norwegian magazine Se og Hoer published an interview this week with Miss Berg who claimed she had spent a night with the princess’ fiance at a popular Swedish skiing resort last year.

The magazine quoted Miss Berg as saying: “I had an affair with Maddie’s boyfriend. We were intimate. He followed me home in a taxi at four o’clock in the morning … He was extremely nice and a gentleman all night long.”

She said that Mr Bergstrom concealled his identity when he met her last year.

“Had I known that he had a woman I would never have done anything like this,” she said. “I feel sorry for Madeleine who has an unfaithful man. She deserves better.”

Another paper Aftonbladet reports that Madeleine was aware of the affair, and was worried about when it would come to light. At Madeleine’s suggestion the couple were apparently attending therapy sessions in an attempt to save their romance.
