Joni Mitchell calls Bob Dylan a plagiarist

Bob Dylan - Joni Mitchell(HMG) – In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, folk singer Joni Mitchell is asked and gives many interesting answers about her life and times during her great career.  There was a real stunner answer though out of what seems to be a harmless question.

The interviewer observes that: “The folk scene you came out of had fun creating personas. You were born Roberta Joan Anderson, and someone named Bobby Zimmerman became Bob Dylan,”

Mitchell replies, “Bob is not authentic at all. He’s a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception. We are like night and day, he and I.”

Oddly the interviewer went right on with his next question, instead of following up, with ‘what the heck is that all about?’

I was looking around the web to see if these two had some previous history and found a quote by Joni in 1996 here, where she seemed to be pretty complimentary of Dylan’s musical innovation, so who knows what  happened since then?

Oh and Joni also trashed Madonna in the interview, saying she was the crux at which the world became stupid and shallow (referring to Madge as Nero).
