Happy Earth Day 2010!

(HMG) – Happy 40th anniversary of the annual Earth Day, which raises awareness about environmental issues. Instituted by the late Wisconson Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day is celebrated two times per year — Northern Hemisphere countries celebrate it in Spring, while Southern Hemisphere countries celebrate it in Fall. As a direct result of the success of that first Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was established in 1970, and later that year the Clean Air Act was enacted, followed three years later by the Endangered Species Act. This year, Earth Day 2010 will coincide with the World People’s Conference on Climate Change, to be held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and with the International Year of Biodiversity.
