Fox Officially Cancels 24
[HMG] – As expected per our previous report last week Kiefer Sutherland’s real-time action drama, 24, has been officially canceled. Since making its debut in November of 2001, the real-time action drama, 24 has been an international hit and a solid bet in the ratings. But the groundbreaking action drama will air its final real-time episode in May, the victim of a confluence of circumstances, namely ratings were sliding, costs were going up, and fresh ideas were waning. As the weeks tick down to the show’s final hour, executive producer Howard Gordon promises a strong finish coupled with the current New York-based storyline taking a dark and creatively risky turn for the final episodes.
And 24′s fans need not despair — Jack Bauer may disappear from your TV screen, but it’s highly likely he’ll be back on the big one; Kiefer and the ’24′ team have been making plans for a movie for years, but while the show was in production those plans were a dream. If the ax does fall they can make the dream real.
Fox already has a draft script that takes Bauer to Europe, and the suits at the network apparently love the idea..
And it’s not like the show’s long run has been unrewarded – 24 has won 7 Emmy’s, two Golden Globes, a Producers Guild Award, four SAG statuettes and even the 2004 ‘Royal Television Society Award’ from the very picky Brits.
