Wes Craven confirms plans for ‘Scream 4′

scream-4-david and courteney[HMG] – Clearly sharing Hollywood’s regrettable lack of a single creative and original idea, Wes Craven and Dimension Films have just agreed to make ‘Scream 4′ – yet another installment of that successful but perhaps tired horror franchise.

What passes for a plot in these things is not decided, or even written as yet, but the now 70-year old Mr. Craven will return as director, while Neve Campbell, David Arquette and his wife Courteney Cox will also reboot their roles, and be joined by a group of young actors who have yet to be cast.

The new movie will open on April 15th of 2011 — exactly ten years after ‘Scream 3′ was released. And the motive for this latest intellectual cop-out is easy — Money.

Made in 1996 for just $14-million, ‘Scream’ earned the studio $161-million worldwide; This caused a sequel, which earned them $172-million, and part 3 managed to grab another $161.6-million back in 2000.

And as they can’t – or just can’t be bothered – to think of something new as a plot in ten solid years, we now get to suffer the same basic story all over again, and word is this will kickoff a brand new trilogy, with treatments for Screams 5 and 6.

“Scream’ has been an integral part of Dimension’s history, and I look forward to continuing the franchise,” Bob Weinstein, Dimension’s CEO told Variety.

And there we see a masterful example of the kind of bare-faced bravado so often found among those who sell the public the same piece of old rope, while engaged in an allegedly ‘creative’ profession.

And just to prove it’s no fluke, Dimension now says their entire 2011 schedule is focused on continuing to exploit all their franchises. You don’t even have to wait long to suffer — “Piranha 3D” will open nationwide on August 27.

The prospect of what might follow that could be the basis of a truly nightmarish film by itself…
