‘Dancing With The Stars’ Debut Fun But Few Surprises

Nicole Scherzinger with Derek Hough(HMG) – It’s an exciting new season of Dancing With The Stars which kicked off last night, with new celebrities and a new co-host, Brooke Burke. Not to take anything away from the show and what looks like a promising season but some things don’t change in casting the celebrities, 80-year-old folks are not going to be able to fairly compete, and people with dancing and choreography backgrounds are usually going to excel to the point that maybe it’s an unfair advantage.   Kudos to former legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who gave it a brave go and is and inspiration to us all.  Did Buzz dance well?  No, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets some votes and sticks around for a while, though he has no chance to win.  And what’s with the judges, particularly Bruno and Len with their caustic remarks.  You think someone didn’t dance well fine, tell them what you think they need to work on and score them appropriately, but there is no need to be nasty!

I thought ESPN personality Erin Andrews, “The Bachelor,” Jake Pavelka and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco looked good, and with some votes could become really good dancers in future shows.  It comes as absolutely no surprise to me anyway, that Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger (a singer and professional dancer), gave the best performance and has to be considered the favorite, especially being paired with Derek Hough.  I was surprisingly by the relatively weak performance from ( “I can’t turn the other way” ) Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek.  His scores were good but I think he might struggle with the faster dances to come.  Anyway it looks like it’s going to be a fun season!
