Demi Moore saves teen in Twitter suicide threat
[HMG] – Contrary to evidence provided by Tila Tequila there are intelligent ways to use Twitter, one of which has just been displayed by Demi Moore and ‘Greek Wedding’ star, Nia Vardalos, who used 140 characters to save a man’s life.
At 10.05pm local time Friday, 18-year old Jeremy Lynch sent a tweet to his followers late Friday saying he was depressed and was preparing to hang himself at his home in Casselberry, near Orlando, Florida.
“I’m about to go hang myself from a tree outside my house and end my life,” he posted. “I have no reason to live anymore.”
As one of her 2.6-million followers, Demi’s Twitter account received the short text. She replied and then kept him talking. Meanwhile, Nia, who was following the exchange, called a suicide hotline and alerted police.
Officers promptly arrived at the home and found Jeremy at his computer desk, crying and clearly distraught. His mother told them he was “very emotional and diagnosed with OCD.” Jeremy was then placed in protective custody and escorted to hospital for more direct care.
Vardalos, 47, then posted a tweet to assure other tweeters the crisis was over; “I gave his name+city. They went to home, helped him,” one message read. Later she wrote, “Just spoke to Florida police again; They’re with him now. He is okay, it’s not a hoax.”
And Demi seems to be quite a lightning-rod for those who can’t cope — Last April a San Jose woman tweeted that she was also planning to end her own life. But Demi called the cops and the woman was saved.
As for Jeremy, his current condition is so far unknown, but you can bet the two ladies plan to get considerable mileage out of this…
