Corey Haim[HMG] – Details of the saddening and untimely death of Corey Haim early this morning continue to emerge, and it seems the young actor could have almost been saved.

The Assistant Chief Coroner for Los Angeles county, Ed Winter says 38-year old Corey was still conscious when paramedics arrived at his apartment near Burbank. He even climbed out of bed on his own, but quickly collapsed.

Complaining of nothing more serious than symptoms of flu, Corey was then helped into an ambulance and transported to the nearby St. Joseph’s Hospital. There, staff there worked briskly to save him but Corey was pronounced dead at 2.15am local time.

Mr. Winter says they found no illegal drugs at the home, but four prescription drug bottles are now being checked.

Corey’s mother, who shared the apartment is understandably crushed;

“I’m a cancer victim and Corey was helping me at home,” Judy told Radar. “He was a good boy. I’m overcome by his death.”

Staff at the convenience store located inside the sprawling complex have told reporters that Corey was shopping there just yesterday and seemed ‘upbeat, and in good spirits.’

Born December 23, 1971 in Toronto, Canada, Corey was enlisted in drama classes by his mother to help him battle shyness. After some minor roles he won the part for which he may best be remembered – Sam in 1987′s ‘The Lost Boys.’

And it was on that set that Corey met drugs.

A joint led to cocaine, that led to crack and he recently admitted to being a relapsing addict almost ever since.

An autopsy will now be performed to determine the exact cause of death, but Police say early evidence suggests Corey died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

Ironically Corey was approached just in the last week or so, by the casting company for “Celebrity Rehab.”  Sources connected with Dr. Drew’s show tell TMZ, that the casting producers called Corey. They say he was “extremely defensive and insulted, saying, ‘It’s the last show I’d ever do,’” and the conversation ended with Corey saying, “I do not need help.”
