Hollywood’s worst-kept secret – Sean Hayes admits he’s gay

[HMG] – When ‘How I Met Your Mother’ star, Neil Patrick Harris came out as gay in 2006 most folks were truly surprised. As for this week’s escapee from the Hollywood closet, Sean Hayes…Not so much.
When the 39-year old actor burst onto the scene in 1998 as the flamboyant Jack McFarland in NBC’s ‘Will & Grace,’ speculation that no straight guy could play ‘gay’ that well soon led to rumors. But Sean was in public denial.
“When you see me play Jack, I want you to believe that’s a gay character. And when I play a straight character, I want you to believe that, too,” he explained to reporters when W+G closed its 16 Emmy Award winning run in 2006.
But now preparing for his debut on Broadway opposite Kristin Chenoweth in ‘Promises, Promises’ a musical version of the classic 1960 Jack Lemmon film, ‘The Apartment’ Sean has finally decided to tell the whole story – He’s a gay Emmy winner, and proud of both facts.
“I feel I’ve contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, and if anyone wants to argue that, I’m open to it,” he boldly declares.
But Sean also claims the years of suspicion and whispers about his private life really hurt;
“Why would you go down that path with somebody who’s done so much for the gay community?” he asks Qweerty. “That’s the thing about celebrity: It sets you up to fail because the expectation is so high. What more do you want me to do? Stand on a float? Then what? — It’s never enough!”
I’d say all that’s required is to drop the pretense and admit who you are. Especially when you plan to claim ‘monumental’ contributions to the struggle endured by those you self-servingly denied as your peers for more than 12 years.
Oh, and just for the record, Sean has a friend. But don’t ask about that guy or he’ll get all upset – Again.
