This year’s Oscar edition of ‘The Barbara Walters Special’ will be the last
(HMG) – Barbara Walters announced that this year’s Oscar edition of “The Barbara Walters Special,” featuring Best Actress nominee Sandra Bullock and Best Supporting Actress nominee Mo’Nique, would be her last. In addition to in-depth interviews with the two Academy Award-nominated women, the special will feature a retrospective of the past 29 years.
Walters spoke with The NY Daily News about why she’s calling it quits and her favorite interview:
When you look back at all the interviews you’ve done over the years, from John Travolta to Shirley MacLaine to Sophia Loren to Miley Cyrus, which stand out the most in your memory?
Bette Davis, in 1987. It was after she had a stroke. She was unrecognizable, but she was as feisty and as direct and, in a sense, angry as ever. I think it was one of her last, if not the last, interview she did. She died two years later.
What made you decide to walk away from the special this year?
It’s something that I’ve been thinking about. The times have changed. It’s no longer very special to have a movie star [on your show], because there are so many outlets now. For many years, to be on this special, it was something that was extremely important. Not that it isn’t this year, but it was almost the only way that you could see these stars.
So that changed, and also, I’ve been there, done that. Twenty-nine years is a long time.
The Oscar-night edition of “The Barbara Walters Special” airs March 7 at 7 p.m. on ABC.
