The Beatles iconic home, Abbey Road up for sale
[HMG] – The musical world has been blessed with truly iconic figures — Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and others, but one of the best known does not even breathe — The Beatles’ symbolic home, Abbey Road. And it’s now up for sale.
Trapped between huge levels of debt and collapsing music sales the studio’s owners, EMI are looking unload the famous north London location.
The asking price is thought to be around $45-million, but private equity firm Terra Firma [who are in charge of the sale] say they need closer to $160-million just to keep all of EMI’s debts up to date.
The studio, which began life as a private Georgian-style home built in 1831 has been the setting for some of the greatest musical sounds of all time; Pink Floyd made ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ there in 1973, and Radiohead, Coldplay, Lily Allen, Robbie Williams, plus ’80s sensations Spandau Ballet and Simple Minds also feature among the studio’s vast list of guests.
But it was the Beatles classic 1969 album that put the place on the map — To this day, about half-a-dozen Beatles addicts a week nearly get themselves killed trying to pose on that crosswalk [Which the Brits call a 'Pelican Crossing'.]
Due to the onset of downloaded music — and some very poor management – EMI has been almost insolvent for years. Terra Firma bought them from Citigroup in 2007 for $6-billion, and is now suing the bankers, claiming they inflated the price by not telling Terra their only competitor had already walked away from the deal.
Citigroup denies this but the case is ongoing.
