Angelina Jolie meets Haiti earthquake victims

Angelina Jolie visits the Dario Contrera Hospitall in the Dominican Republic
(HMG) – Actor Angelina Jolie begun two days of meetings and has met with hospitalised victims of the of the Jan. 12 Haitian earthquake in the Dominican Republic. Jolie who is a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency was accompanied by Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the son of Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. Jolie also toured a Doctors Without Borders hospital in a Port-au-Prince suburb, waving to onlookers. She and husband Brad Pitt have contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for its emergency medical operations in Haiti.
Her visit came as Haitians braced themselves for the onset of deadly spring rains and workers are racing to move victims outside of flood plains and into tents. The downpours threaten to cause landslides and bring about health problems in the makeshift camps where more than 500,000 people are living. Rain is already falling in some parts of the country, but Haiti’s shattered capital, where most of the quake damage occurred, has been spared so far – a rarity for this time of year, when afternoon showers are common. Steady rains could come as soon as the end of the month, and hurricane season begins in June.
