2010 Oscar Nominations Announced with “Avatar,” and “The Hurt Locker” Leading the Way

(HMG) – There were no huge surprises this morning as the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were announced by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway.  The science-fiction sensation “Avatar” and the war-on-terror thriller “The Hurt Locker” lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for James Cameron and ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow.

Acting nominees include the four stars who have dominated early awards shows: Lead players Sandra Bullock for the football drama “The Blind Side” and Jeff Bridges for the country-music tale “Crazy Heart” and supporting performers Mo’Nique for “Precious” and Christoph Waltz for “Inglourious Basterds.”

For the first time the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five. The Oscar telecast will air on ABC on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at 8 p.m. EST. and be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide. A complete list of nomineees is listed below:
