Leonardo DiCaprio heads viral climate campaign

[HMG] – The recent Copenhagen talks on climate change and the political tricks here at home have urged many people to action. Among those now concerned are Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Norton, Forest Whitaker, Chace Crawford, Felicity Huffman and others. And they want all of you to pitch in.

In league with the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund, these and many other stars are now calling on the young generation to help secure their own future by demanding lawmakers in Congress act to make us more green.

The Senate is currently stalling on a climate-themed bill that would ensure a clean-energy future for America, create 2 million new jobs in that sector, and confront climate change. The House of Representatives passed their bill back in June, and President Obama wants the Senate to pass its version as soon as they can.

But D.C’s been flapping its lips about this for two decades already — and it’s still not been done.

“We are in a race against time,” says Jay Inslee, Democrat from Washington. “Mother Nature isn’t sitting around waiting for us to get our political act together.”

The President’s recent stimulus bill included $80-billion for clean energy projects and green-themed jobs. But the opposition raised against this new bill is both well-funded and brutal;

A multi-sourced campaign of misinformation and flat-out lies has been aided by the largest swarm of anti-green lobbyists Capitol Hill has ever seen — 2,810. That’s no less than five for every lawmaker.

Last year, the coal industry alone spent over $10-million helping those lobbyists strangle the bill. The Heritage Foundation [a well-known source of science-flavored BS,] also tried to scare us into demanding a halt by claiming it would raise electricity costs by 90%, gas prices by 74%, and shred about 2.5 million jobs.

Republicans even used an MIT study that “proved” any bill would “cost every American family up to $3,100 per year.” Then John Reilly – one of the authors – sent John Boehner a withering letter, noting he and his party’s scare-tactic number was actually “ten times the correct estimate.”

Since then, Mr. Boehner’s become strangely mute on the subject.
