‘All My Children’ Star James Mitchell Dead at 89
(HMG) -Â Soap opera star James Mitchell, who who for nearly three decades played ruthless tycoon Palmer Cortlandt on ‘All My Children,’ has passed away at the age of 89. Mitchell died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which was complicated by a bout of pneumonia, his his longtime partner Albert Wolsky said.
Mitchell as wealthy patriarch of the Cortlandt family, had appeared in more than 300 episodes of the ABC show from 1979 – 2008, and made final TV appearance on All My Children’s 40th anniversary episode earlier this month. He was a regular on the show until 2008. Mitchell, a dancer who began his career with the American Ballet Theater, was also a Broadway star, playing lead roles in the likes of Brigadoon, Carousel, Billion Dollar Baby and Paint Your Wagon, prior to his soap career.
