SAG Awards 2010 – Few Surprises But Some Nice Moments

Betty White and Sandra Bullock

(HMG) – The SAG awards last night hosted by Justin Timberlake, offered something old and something new last night.  In the best acting categories, Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock once again walked off with the top trophies for their starring roles in dramas (”Crazy Heart” and “The Blind Side,” respectively). While Mo’Nique once again took best supporting actress for, “Precious. Coupled with their wins in last Sunday’s Golden Globes, all three actors would have to be considered early favorites for Oscars, though Meryl Streep is still a strong contender for her role in “Julie & Julia.”

In what I consider to be a surprise win, Quentin Tarantino’s World War 2 cinematic historical revision  “Inglourious Basterds,” won the Screen Actors Guild’s biggest award Saturday night for movie ensemble acting, and a best supporting actor award for Christoph Waltz’s turn as a Nazi.

And then there was 88-year-old Betty White, who was given the Life Achievement Award and showed the crowd  her usual humor and grace. Remembered fondly for her roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and  “The Golden Girls”  she is still getting great roles like recent films “The Proposal” and “Pony.”

“I should be presenting an award to you for the privilege of working in this business,” White reportedly said. “You still can’t get rid of me. I just turned 88 last Sunday and I still have lots to do.”

As for TV awards, “Mad Men” won the best drama series ensemble for the second year in a row, while 19 cast members of Fox TV newcomer “Glee,” won the best comedy series ensemble.

30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey bagged the best acting in a comedy series. Michael Hall of “Dexter” again won best actor in a drama series, while Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife,” won best actress in a drama.

Kevin Bacon won as best actor in a movie or miniseries for Taking Chance,” while Drew Barrymore received best actress honors in the category for “Grey Gardens.”

Betty White could not have been more delightful! Which explains, I guess, why we continue to enjoy her wit and zest for life, and hope to, for years to come.
