Did Ricky Gervais kill or bomb at the Golden Globes?
(HMG) – I think a lot of people were shocked by the performance of Golden Globe Host Ricky Gervais especially the celebrities he belittled. I admire Ricky a bit for not being bashful about making fun of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but I thought his edgy performance was off a bit and got a bit mean spirited at times. And he kind of double crossed NBC who asked him to take out about five of his more controversial gags. He only tipped his hand that he was going to cut loose during his red carpet interview, saying he was not prepared to cut the controversial material from his set.
“I said I won’t do them – but I’m going to do them. It’s live, so what can they do? They can’t stop me.”
Some of the eyebrow raising remarks included, upon opening the ceremony, Ricky remarks: “Looking at all these faces reminds me of all the great work that’s been done this year… by cosmetic surgeons.
“I had a penis reduction. Just got the one now. It’s pretty tiny. So are my hands. So when I hold it, it looks pretty big. I wish I was doing that now, to be honest.
“Now let’s get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno.”
Colin Farrell got introduced by Ricky with: “The great thing about the Golden Globes is that it crushes prejudice and stereotypes.
“A particular stereotype is that Irishmen are drunk, hairy hellraisers. Now please welcome Colin Farrell.”
And perhaps the meanest shot was taken at recovering alcoholic Mel Gibson:
Ricky said: “I’ve had a couple… I’m not going to lie to you. I hope I haven’t offended anyone. I like a drink as much as the next man… Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”

I think Ricky Gervais did a super job, I love his sense of humor. Didn’t look like the drinking joke bothered Mel any. Being the host of these shows usually includes a bit of ball-busting. I didn’t find him to be mean spirited, but very funny. I think he definitely should have gotten on the NBC execs more for the whole Conan/Leno issue. I thought it was a good show and Ricky Gervais did a fine job.
I also thought Gervais did a great job! I thought he was hilarious. Nothing too harsh. I usually hate it when celebs promote their movies on award shows, but it seemed to work for him. The jokes about The Office were funny. He definitely toned it down a bit though because I thought he would have bashed NBC much more like he did when he was on Conan. Overall, it was a good show.
